World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought

Desertification is the degradation of land in arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid areas. It is caused primarily by human activities and climatic variations. Desertification does not refer to the expansion of existing deserts. It occurs because dryland ecosystems, which cover over one third of the world‘s land area, are extremely vulnerable to overexploitation and inappropriate land use. Poverty, political instability, deforestation, overgrazing and bad irrigation practices can all undermine the productivity of the land. The World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought is observed every year to promote public awareness of international efforts to combat desertification. The day is a unique moment to remind everyone that land degradation neutrality is achievable through problem-solving, strong community involvement and co-operation at all levels.

What If

  • What if 2020 isn’t canceled?⁣
  • What if 2020 is the year we’ve been waiting for?⁣
  • A year so uncomfortable, so painful, so scary, so raw — that it finally forces us to grow.⁣
  • A year that screams so loud, finally awakening us from our ignorant slumber.⁣
  • A year we finally accept the need for change.⁣
  • Declare change. Work for change. Become the change.
  • A year we finally band together, instead of⁣ pushing each other further apart.⁣

⁣ * 2020 isn’t cancelled, but rather⁣

  • the most important year of them all.”⁣

LCWR Condemns Killing of George Floyd

National Day of Mourning

As we mark the death of 100,000 people in the U.S. from COVID-19, the Leadership Conference of Women Religious joins an unprecedented group of 100+ national faith leaders—from Christian, Jewish and Muslim traditions representing major denominations, national faith-based organizations, local congregations, and millions of people of faith across the country—who call for a National Day of Mourning and Lament. Together, they look to federal, state, and local elected officials to observe Monday, June 1 as National Day of Mourning and Lament, a day marked by moments of silence, lowering of flags, interfaith vigils, ringing of bells, and civic memorials.

This call is being supported by the U.S. Conference of Mayors who represent over 1,400 mayors across the country. Mayors lead on the frontline of the COVID-19 response effort and continue to model critical local leadership amid this difficult time.

Together, interfaith leaders and mayors across the nation will call us to mourn, lament, and honor the dead, acknowledge the unequal nature of our suffering, pray together for the healing of the nation, and recommit to the difficult work ahead.

The National Day of Mourning and Lament will follow a weekend of diverse services–Friday Muslim, Saturday Jewish, and Sunday Christian (including Protestant, Catholic, Evangelical, African American, Hispanic, Asian American, and Native American) all united in times of lament and mourning for the dead. The vocation of remembering will unite across lines of religion and traditions and transcend our politics.

We can join our voices and actions to this National Day of Mourning by the following actions:

  • Mark the grim milestone on Sunday (Pentecost) in your own celebration of the Eucharist or common prayer and encourage others to do the same.
  • Contact your elected officials, mayors, governors, and members of Congress and ask them to designate Monday, June 1 a National Day of Mourning and Lament– remembering the dead with moments of silence, lowering of flags, interfaith vigils, and civic memorials.
  • Use social media and other communication platforms to post prayers and laments, names, photos, and tributes to those who have died of the coronavirus during the days leading up to June 1. #DayofMourning, #Lament100k

First Letter to the Covidians

  • 1 Covidians 12:1-11
  • Now concerning the wearing of masks, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed. You know that in the time before Covid, we were enticed and led astray thinking that we were not responsible for one another's health. Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the spirit of love ever says 'masks be cursed!'; and no one can say 'masks are a really good idea for everybody!’ except through a spirit of love.
  • Now there are varieties of masks, but the same spirit of wearing them; and there are varieties of mask wearers, but the same virus; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same precautions that must be shown to everyone.
  • To each is given a manifestation of a mask for the common good. To one a mask is given through our mask makers, and to another a purchased one online, or in a store according to the same spirit of protection. Some fashion one after watching a video on YouTube, to another… they already had some. The knowledge of needing to wear one according to the same spirit, to another faith that the same spirit will improve health and save lives.
  • Another receives the gifts of healing by this generous spirit, to another this seems no less than the working of a miracle, another prophecies that we'll get through all of this sooner by observing these loving precautions, to another the discernment of figuring out how all can get one, to another the knowledge that a mask hides all kinds of mouths and tongues, to another the understanding that those mouths and tongues are still there, behind those masks.
  • All these are activated by one and the same spirit, and we hope to allot to each one individually just as they choose.
  • In other words, wear a mask!…
  • Because loving our neighbor as ourselves is the crux of it. When we wear a mask we are saying that we love and care for ourselves, and that we love and care for our neighbors. If our neighbor is sick (and perhaps doesn't even know it yet) our masks help protect US. If WE are sick (and perhaps don't even know it yet) our masks help protect OUR NEIGHBOR…
  • … it is a tangible and visible manifestation and practice of our LOVE.

Stay at home: a love letter during a pandemic

  • This letter was written collaboratively by a group of sisters under age 50 following the outbreak of COVID-19 in the United States. Living in multigenerational communities, we wanted to express our concern for our sisters who are in the highest risk groups for this illness, some of whom are not heeding the advice of the medical community to stay at home and practice social distancing.

The God Minute

–Mary Ellen Tierney shared this:

  • I have an app called The God Minute which I listen to every day. Today’s reflection is simply a song sung by Elvis Presley. It is on YouTube with the song and a beautiful video. It is called “One Pair of Hands”. I highly recommend it. I hope it will bring you peace and comfort during these difficult days. If you can't find it, Google One Pair of Hands and several versions will come up. The Elvis one is the best.
  • Hosted by Catholic TeamWorks and led by Vincentian priest Fr. Ron Hoye, The God Minute is a short, reflective morning prayer based on the Divine Office that includes a psalm, a short reading and a reflection to begin your day with the Lord. Beautiful, reflective and less than 10 minutes. Take a few God Minutes each morning and see how your day rises in abundance.

Visit this page for liturgies for Holy Thursday, Good Friday and the Easter Vigil.

See also this video meditation on worshiping with the Communion of Saints to set the stage for how we can be united in prayer during this Holy Week, while still being physically separated.

The Easter Triduum: Holy Thursday Let the music of these days into your hearts. Let the prayer seep into your soul.

The Easter Triduum: Good Friday Good Friday liturgy is less a day of mourning and more a day of remembering, of seeing once again the boundless love of God.

The Easter Triduum: Easter Vigil We gather as a family to tell the stories of our salvation and draw strength from the remembering.

  • Several sisters have shared that they would like to do something to help the dear neighbor. Though we are physically separated, we want to help those who are serving on the front lines, those who are sick and suffering, those who are dying. We want to comfort those who are lonely and reassure those who are afraid. Some have asked if we can go out, if we can do something.
  • Yet we have been told that the best thing we can do is to #StayHome and keep ourselves well. We can stop the suffering of others by keeping our distance.
  • However, in a conversation we thought it might be nice to shout it out that we are near in spirit, if far in body. So here’s an idea that we can try together:

  1. Take some time to pray for those affected by the pandemic: the sick, the dying, healthcare workers, essential workers, the unemployed, the homeless, children, the lonely, scientists, government leaders…
  2. Make a sign saying: The Sisters of St. Joseph are praying for… [name whoever is the focus of your prayers]. #COVID-19 #StayHome
  3. Take a selfie - a picture of yourself with your sign, like this image and post it on social media. If you can’t post it, send it to a friend to post, or to Sarah Baker sbaker@csjsl.org and she will post it.

  • If you have a printer, you can print the message and fill in your prayer intention. Or you can handwrite your message.

Stations of the Cross

Pray as you go

  • Pray as you go is a daily prayer session, designed to go with you wherever you go, to help you pray whenever you find time, but particularly whilst traveling to and from work, study, etc.
  • A new prayer session is produced every day of the working week and one session for the weekend. It is not a 'Thought for the Day', a sermon or a bible-study, but rather a framework for your own prayer.
  • Lasting between ten and thirteen minutes, it combines music, scripture and some questions for reflection.

Calming Music

–Betty Leiwe

I thought I would pass on several selections of music that I have been playing. Perhaps this could be added to the listing.

-Perhaps it could be labeled Anti Anxiety Covid-19 Music or good calming music -The Clouds' Veil by Liam Lawton from the CD The Soul of the Celtic Soul.

Secondly, a Portland pianist named Michael Allen Harrison is popular in the Pacific Northwest. He has started to do a daily piano concert during these unprecedented times. If you would like to listen to some really beautiful piano music, click below. If you sign up, he will email you a new link every day.

Slow Down Time

From Carol Patron

  • Be still. Stay put. Be aware.
  • Not a new message but one more powerful than most.
  • What I feel is gratitude for what each day is bringing.
  • Not what I planned, not what I expected but blessings galore.
  • Jubilee time. Overwhelming gifts of cards, messages and phone calls.
  • Knocks on the door, flowers, homemade goodies, all filled with love.
  • Caring staff, looking out for us, providing for us at their own risk.
  • Neighbors reaching out, smiles and new ways to hug.
  • Receiving so much goodness challenges and reminds me
  • That God’s caring presence is alive and well and abundant.
  • May I hold onto the peace and calm called for these days.
  • May I walk with the dear neighbor in new ways unfolding daily.
  • May I use this time as gift. May my gratitude grow and spread as dew upon the land.
  • Dear God spread your healing on our Earth in need. Amen.

  • O Mary, you shine continuously on our journey as a sign of salvation and hope.
  • We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick.
  • At the foot of the Cross you participated in Jesus’ pain, with steadfast faith.
  • You, Salvation of the Roman People, know what we need.
  • We are certain that you will provide, so that,
  • as you did at Cana of Galilee,
  • joy and feasting might return after this moment of trial.
  • Help us, Mother of Divine Love,
  • to conform ourselves to the Father’s will
  • and to do what Jesus tells us:
  • He who took our sufferings upon Himself, and bore our sorrows to bring us,
  • through the Cross, to the joy of the Resurrection. Amen.
  • We seek refuge under your protection, O Holy Mother of God.
  • Do not despise our pleas – we who are put to the test – and deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin.

Hand-Made Masks

  • “Prior to modern disposable masks, washable fabric masks were standard use for hospitals,” said Dawn Rogers, MSN, RN, FNP-C, Patient Safety & Infection Prevention Office. “We will be able to sterilize these masks and use them repeatedly as needed. While it’s less than ideal, we want to do our best to protect our staff and patients during this pandemic.”
